The Castle Rock EDC’s 2007 Business Survey found that Castle Rock is home to 2,710 businesses as compared to 2,587 in 2005. In recent years, commercial space is being built at a rate of 300,000 to 500,000 square feet per year. This trend is expected to continue and allow further growth in the size of the business community.

56% or 1,157 of those businesses were home-based; 44% or 1,193 of them were commercially based. Of the area’s commercially based businesses, 76% have 1 to 5 employees and 43% are located in downtown Castle Rock. 26% of the area’s roughly 13,474 business and government employees work downtown.

The largest employment sectors are government with 3,463 FTEs (Full Time Employee Equivalents), retail with 2,228, eating/drinking establishments with 1,231, health services with 639 and building trades with 849. Government accounts for 26% of all local employment. The 24 largest private sector employers, ones with over 50 FTEs, account for another 17%.
